Brief Screening Report
The
main theme of Sweeney Todd the Demon barber of Fleet Street is that Sweeney Todd wants revenge on Judge Turpine.
I think two of the most important scenes from the movie Sweeney Todd the Demon
Barber of Fleet Street is when he is singing “No Place like London" and it
is repeated in "Poor thing" which Mrs. Lovett sings to Mr. Todd. This
scene takes place about six minutes into the movie, He is singing about a
barber and his wife and how she was beautiful and then there comes another man,
Judge Turpine, who also saw her beauty. Sweeney then is taken away by the
police to never see his beautiful wife. Following this the next scene is him
going back to his barber shop to see that there is an Mrs. Lovett’s meat pie
shop there instead. At about twelve and a half minutes Mrs. Lovett sings
"Poor thing" to Mr. Todd. What is shown here in this scene is what
happened after Mr. Todd was taken away. Judge Turpine kept pursuing the barber’s
wife, and one night the Judge took her to a party and got her drunk and then
raped her in front of everybody at the party, after that she went crazy and
poisoned herself. These two scenes are crucial because this is where you see
the transformation of Sweeney, where he goes from depressed to revengeful. He
is out for revenge on Judge Turpine, for what he has done to his beautiful
family.
