Brief Screening Report
The
main theme of Sweeney Todd the Demon barber of Fleet Street is that Sweeney Todd wants revenge on Judge Turpine.
I think two of the most important scenes from the movie Sweeney Todd the Demon
Barber of Fleet Street is when he is singing “No Place like London" and it
is repeated in "Poor thing" which Mrs. Lovett sings to Mr. Todd. This
scene takes place about six minutes into the movie, He is singing about a
barber and his wife and how she was beautiful and then there comes another man,
Judge Turpine, who also saw her beauty. Sweeney then is taken away by the
police to never see his beautiful wife. Following this the next scene is him
going back to his barber shop to see that there is an Mrs. Lovett’s meat pie
shop there instead. At about twelve and a half minutes Mrs. Lovett sings
"Poor thing" to Mr. Todd. What is shown here in this scene is what
happened after Mr. Todd was taken away. Judge Turpine kept pursuing the barber’s
wife, and one night the Judge took her to a party and got her drunk and then
raped her in front of everybody at the party, after that she went crazy and
poisoned herself. These two scenes are crucial because this is where you see
the transformation of Sweeney, where he goes from depressed to revengeful. He
is out for revenge on Judge Turpine, for what he has done to his beautiful
family.

What I look for in movies
My all time favorite movie would have to be Rent because I enjoy watching the characters and I get engulfed into the story line. I feel like I am one of the characters. I also love singing and Rent has got that covered. I personally respond more to the formal elements; for example sound, acting, and plot. What matters more to me is formal elements because without the formal elements I would not be interested with the cultural ones. Rent is about a group of strangers that become friends and they are living in the poor part of New York City. They are having difficulties with drug, money, and aids. Some examples of how the formal elements pike my interest in the cultural ones, is when a few of the friends are in a support group for aids. The song they sing is "life support" and the song helps me understand the meaning of what they are going through. Also another song "Will I" just puts emphasis on how they feel and it makes you feel like you are in the movie and it keeps me interested. I really like watching movies where they make you feel like you are in the movie as well; Rent is the perfect example of that.

My response to "Winning Actually Isn't the Only Thing"
I read an article by David Maraniss "Winning Actually Isn't the Only Thing"
What had happened on
the Monday night football game, The Packers verses the Seahawks. The final play
in the end zone with no time left in the game, the awful call by the
replacement referee. The fact that the officials upheld the call for the
touchdown that decided the game that left all packer fans in disbelief. Then
David Maraniss explained if winning was really everything. Would that call have
matter if the packers were up enough, and what if the Packers were in the
Seahawks shoes? Maraniss stated “He never believed that winning is the only
thing, neither did Vince Lambardi.” Also He stated “In searching my own soul, I
honestly think that if the tables were turned and the Packers had won Monday
night that way - or if I were Carroll or Wilson - I would have felt compelled
to see the truth and talk about it. I would have had a harder time sleeping
with that sham on my conscience than with the anger of the call going the other
way.”
I agree with David
Maraniss argument that winning is not the only thing. I am a true green and
gold Packer fan. The Packers are the only NFL team owned by the fans. I truly
believe that if we were in the seahawks situation, we as a team and fans would
have been compelled to see the truth and talk about it, instead of thinking
that it was a good win and good call. The Packers would have had so much sham
on their conscious. The Packers have more respect for themselves and their
fans. Winning is not the only thing. I would rather play well and lose then
play bad and win.
